Shimba Hills National Reserve is a stunning gem located in Kwale County, Kenya, about 33 km from Mombasa and 15 km from the coast. It is renowned for its coastal rainforest, woodland, and grassland, making it one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa. Here are some highlights:
Sable Antelope: The reserve is home to Kenya's only population of the endangered sable antelope.
Elephants: Approximately 700 elephants roam the reserve, although their numbers have led to challenges with vegetation and human conflict.
Other animals include giraffes, leopards, civet cats, hyenas, bush pigs, buffaloes, and various species of monkeys.
Over 111 bird species have been recorded, including coastal endemics like the Ostrich Eagle and Uluguru Sunbird.
The reserve boasts over 50% of Kenya's rare plants, including endangered cycads and orchids.
Sheldrick Falls: A breathtaking waterfall surrounded by lush greenery.
Scenic Viewpoints: Ocean View Point and Pengo Hill offer magnificent views of the landscape.
Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary: Located north of the reserve, it provides a safe corridor for elephants.
