The Ngong Hills are a ridge in the Great Rift Valley near Nairobi, Kenya. The name "Ngong" comes from a Maasai phrase meaning "rhinoceros spring." The hills offer scenic views of Nairobi National Park, the city of Nairobi, and the Great Rift Valley, with the peak rising to 2,460 meters above sea level. During British colonial rule, the area was a major settler farming region. The Ngong Hills feature prominently in the film Out of Africa. The area still shows colonial houses and the grave of Denys Finch Hatton.
The hills have a popular walking trail and are managed by the Kenya Forest Service, which charges a fee and offers guides and security. Ngong Hills Wind Power Station, Kenya's first wind farm, is also located nearby. Ngong Hills Mbagathi WRUA actively works on improving the water catchment area by planting indigenous trees and conducting town cleaning activities, covering several important rivers and regions, including Nairobi National Park.
